Functionality Investigations of Dry-Lubricated Molybdenum Trioxide Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearings

In addition to using conventional lubricants, such as oil and grease, rolling bearings can also be used with a dry lubricant. For example, the use of lubricant systems is necessary when application oils or greases not possible (e.g., at high temperatures in aerospace applications). The requirements solid are reduce friction wear mechanical contact partners. this work, molybdenum-based coating system was applied by means physical vapor deposition (PVD). consists molybdenum (Mo) reservoir trioxide (MoO3) top layer. MoO3, which particularly important for run-in lubricating effect, intended continuously regenerate from via tribo-oxidation. To determine behavior, cylindrical roller thrust were used. Experiments demonstrated that lubrication effective frictional behavior has been improved. On one hand, torque considerably reduced and, on other, significantly extended operating times have determined compared unlubricated reference experiments. Simultaneously, material analyses carried out scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). investigations showed MoO3 transferred uncoated bearing components.
